Nearshore vs. offshore staffing: which fits your team?

LATAM vs. the Philippines, time zones, cost and communication — how to choose the right model for the roles you're hiring.

"Offshore" and "nearshore" get used interchangeably, but they solve different problems. Picking the right one comes down to three things: time zones, cost, and the kind of work you're hiring for.

What the terms mean

Offshore usually means hiring far from your time zone — for US companies, most often the Philippines, which has a huge, English-fluent professional workforce in support, admin, IT and finance.

Nearshore means hiring in a nearby time zone — for US companies, Latin America (Mexico, Colombia, Argentina and more), where the business day lines up closely with North America.

Time zones

This is the deciding factor for a lot of teams.

  • Nearshore (LATAM) overlaps almost entirely with US hours. If a role needs live calls, real-time collaboration or same-hour responses — inside sales, customer success, an executive assistant who sits in meetings — nearshore is the easier fit.
  • Offshore (Philippines) runs opposite hours, but most professionals here are used to working US shifts. For support coverage, overnight processing, or "have it done by morning" work, that difference is an advantage, not a problem.

Cost

Both are dramatically cheaper than hiring locally. As a rough guide, offshore tends to be the most cost-effective, with the Philippines offering the best rates for support, admin and finance roles. Nearshore can run a little higher, and is often where you'll find strong bilingual talent and senior developers.

Communication and culture

English fluency is excellent in both regions. The Philippines has deep alignment with US business norms from decades of outsourcing; LATAM brings strong bilingual (English/Spanish) coverage, which matters if you serve Spanish-speaking customers.

A simple way to decide

If the role needs to be on at the same time as you, lean nearshore. If it needs to get things done around the clock or at the lowest cost, lean offshore.

In practice, many teams use both — a nearshore ISA who takes live calls, and an offshore back office that keeps the admin and books clean overnight.

You don't have to figure this out alone. Tell us the role and your hours, and we'll recommend the region and the specific profile that fits — then show you what it costs.
